  1. Registration Requirements

This article details the registration requirements for contributing to and participating in this wiki. It is aimed at new users and outlines the process for creating an account, verifying it (if necessary), and understanding the privileges associated with different user levels. It also covers behavioral expectations and policies related to account security.

Why Register?

While many parts of this wiki can be viewed without an account, registration is *essential* for contributing content, participating in discussions, personalizing your experience, and accessing certain features. Registered users can:

  • Edit pages: Make corrections, add information, and improve existing content. Editing basics are covered in a separate article.
  • Create new pages: Expand the wiki’s knowledge base by adding new articles on relevant topics. See Creating pages for guidance.
  • Participate in discussions: Share your insights, ask questions, and collaborate with other users on Talk pages.
  • Customize your preferences: Choose your preferred appearance, notification settings, and other options.
  • Receive email notifications: Stay informed about changes to pages you're watching or discussions you're involved in.
  • Upload files: Contribute images, documents, and other media to enhance the wiki’s content. Review the File upload guidelines first.
  • Access advanced features: Depending on your user level (explained below), you may gain access to moderation tools or other privileges.

Account Creation

Creating an account is a straightforward process.

1. Click the "Create account" link: This link is typically located in the upper-right corner of the wiki interface, often near the search bar. 2. Choose a username: Select a unique username that adheres to the wiki’s naming conventions. Usernames should be respectful and avoid offensive language. Consider something related to your interests or expertise within the subject matter of the wiki. Avoid using personally identifiable information in your username. 3. Enter your email address: A valid email address is required for account verification (if enabled) and for password recovery. Ensure you have access to the email address you provide. 4. Set a strong password: Choose a strong, unique password that is difficult to guess. A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Do *not* reuse passwords from other websites. Consider using a password manager. 5. Complete the CAPTCHA: A CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) may be presented to verify that you are a human and not a bot. 6. Agree to the terms of use and privacy policy: Carefully read and agree to the wiki’s terms of use and privacy policy before submitting the registration form. These documents outline your rights and responsibilities as a user. 7. Submit the form: Click the "Create account" button to submit the registration form.

Account Verification

Depending on the wiki’s configuration, you may be required to verify your email address before you can fully utilize your account. This helps to prevent spam and ensure the authenticity of users.

  • Check your email: After submitting the registration form, check your email inbox for a verification email from the wiki.
  • Click the verification link: The verification email will contain a link that you must click to verify your email address.
  • Account activated: Once you click the verification link, your account will be activated, and you will be able to log in and start contributing.

If you do not receive a verification email, check your spam folder. If you still haven't received it after a reasonable amount of time, contact the wiki administrators for assistance. See Contacting administrators for details.

User Levels and Privileges

This wiki employs a system of user levels to grant different privileges based on a user’s contributions and trustworthiness.

  • Unregistered Users: Can only view pages. Limited functionality.
  • Registered Users (Autoconfirmed): After a short period and a certain number of edits (typically a few days and 10 edits), users become "autoconfirmed." This allows them to edit semi-protected pages and upload files. This is the standard level for most contributors. Understanding Semi-protected pages is important.
  • Rollbackers: Trusted users with the ability to quickly revert vandalism. This privilege is granted by administrators.
  • Editors: Users with expanded editing permissions, granted by administrators.
  • Administrators: Have full access to all wiki functions, including managing users, protecting pages, and configuring the wiki. Administrators are responsible for maintaining the wiki’s integrity and enforcing its policies. Administrator guidelines detail their responsibilities.
  • Bureaucrats: Can grant and revoke administrator and bureaucrat rights. This is the highest level of access.

Privileges are granted based on demonstrated contributions, adherence to wiki policies, and the administrator’s discretion. Requesting higher privileges does not guarantee they will be granted.

Account Security

Protecting your account is crucial. Here are some best practices:

  • Strong Password: As mentioned earlier, use a strong, unique password.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): If available, enable 2FA for an extra layer of security. 2FA requires you to enter a code from your mobile device in addition to your password when logging in. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access.
  • Keep your email address up-to-date: Ensure your registered email address is current and secure.
  • Beware of phishing scams: Be cautious of suspicious emails or links that ask for your login credentials. Never share your password with anyone.
  • Log out when finished: Log out of your account when you are finished using the wiki, especially if you are using a public computer.
  • Report suspicious activity: If you suspect that your account has been compromised, immediately change your password and report the incident to the wiki administrators.

Account Inactivity and Deletion

Accounts that are inactive for an extended period may be marked as inactive or, in some cases, deleted. The specific policy regarding inactivity varies depending on the wiki’s configuration. Check the Inactivity policy for details.

Users can also request account deletion if they no longer wish to participate in the wiki. Account deletion requests are typically reviewed by administrators. See Requesting account deletion for the process.

Behavioral Expectations and Policies

All users are expected to adhere to the wiki’s behavioral expectations and policies. These policies are designed to foster a respectful and collaborative environment.

  • Civility: Treat other users with respect and avoid personal attacks.
  • Neutral Point of View (NPOV): Present information in a neutral and unbiased manner. Avoid expressing personal opinions or promoting specific viewpoints. Understanding Neutral Point of View is vital.
  • Verifiability: All content must be verifiable through reliable sources. Cite your sources properly. See Citing sources for guidance.
  • No Original Research: The wiki is not a platform for publishing original research. Content should be based on existing knowledge.
  • Copyright: Respect copyright laws. Do not copy and paste content from other websites without permission. Copyright guidelines are essential to follow.
  • Spam: Do not post spam or advertise commercial products or services.
  • Vandalism: Do not intentionally damage or disrupt the wiki. Vandalism will be reverted and may result in account suspension.
  • Conflict of Interest: Disclose any conflicts of interest you may have when contributing content.
  • Editing Etiquette: Follow established editing etiquette, such as using edit summaries and discussing changes on talk pages. Edit summaries are crucial for collaboration.

Violations of these policies may result in warnings, account suspension, or permanent banishment.

Troubleshooting Registration Issues

If you encounter problems during the registration process, here are some troubleshooting steps:

  • Check your email address: Ensure you entered your email address correctly.
  • Check your spam folder: The verification email may have been filtered into your spam folder.
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies: Cached data can sometimes interfere with the registration process.
  • Try a different browser: If you are still having problems, try using a different web browser.
  • Contact the administrators: If you have tried all of the above steps and are still unable to register, contact the wiki administrators for assistance.
