  1. Image Policy

This article details the image policy for this wiki, outlining acceptable uses of images, copyright restrictions, technical guidelines, and best practices for uploading and using images. Understanding and adhering to this policy is crucial for maintaining the quality and legal integrity of our content. This policy applies to all images uploaded to, or linked from, this wiki.

1. General Principles

The primary purpose of images on this wiki is to enhance understanding and illustrate concepts within articles. Images should be relevant, informative, and contribute to the educational value of the content. Decorative images, those serving no informational purpose, are generally discouraged. We prioritize images that directly support the text and improve the user experience. All images must comply with applicable copyright laws and licensing terms. We strive to use freely licensed images whenever possible. Images should be used responsibly and ethically, avoiding offensive or misleading content. This wiki follows a strict policy of prohibiting images that violate the principles of neutrality and verifiability, similar to our Verifiability policy.

2. Acceptable Image Uses

Images are acceptable in the following circumstances:

  • **Illustrative Examples:** To visually represent concepts, processes, or objects discussed in the text. For example, an image of a candlestick pattern in a Technical Analysis article, or a chart demonstrating a Moving Average crossover.
  • **Visual Aids for Explanations:** To clarify complex information or procedures. This could include diagrams, flowcharts, or screenshots. Consider the use of a Fibonacci Retracement diagram to explain its application.
  • **Historical Documentation:** To depict historical events, figures, or artifacts. Images used for historical purposes must be appropriately sourced and contextualized.
  • **Identification and Recognition:** To identify people, places, or objects. Images used for identification should be clearly labeled and relevant to the topic. For instance, an image of a famous economist in an article about Economic Indicators.
  • **Fair Use (Limited):** In certain limited circumstances, images may be used under the principles of fair use. See section 4 for details. Fair use is *not* a blanket exemption from copyright.
  • **Screenshots:** Screenshots of software or websites are permitted when illustrating specific instructions or features, *only* if the copyright holder permits it, or if it falls under fair use. Screenshots should be minimized in size and cropped to focus on the relevant area.

3. Copyright and Licensing

This is the most critical aspect of our image policy. We operate under the principle that all work is copyrighted unless explicitly released under a free license.

  • **Freely Licensed Images:** We strongly encourage the use of images released under free licenses such as Creative Commons licenses (e.g., CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC0). When uploading a freely licensed image, you *must* clearly indicate the license under which it is released. We prefer licenses that allow for commercial use and modification.
  • **Public Domain:** Images in the public domain are free to use without restriction. However, it is important to verify that an image is genuinely in the public domain before uploading it. The Public Domain status can vary depending on jurisdiction.
  • **Copyrighted Images:** Uploading copyrighted images without permission is strictly prohibited. This includes images found online, even if they do not have a copyright notice. You must obtain explicit permission from the copyright holder before uploading a copyrighted image.
  • **Fair Use:** Fair use is a legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission for purposes such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. However, fair use is a complex legal concept, and its application is highly fact-dependent. To claim fair use, you must demonstrate that:
   * The purpose and character of your use are transformative (i.e., you are adding new meaning or expression to the original work).
   * The amount and substantiality of the portion used are reasonable in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole.
   * The use will not negatively impact the market for the original work.
   * You must provide a clear justification for why your use qualifies as fair use. Simply stating "fair use" is insufficient. For example, using a small portion of a stock chart to illustrate a specific Chart Pattern might qualify as fair use, but using the entire chart for decorative purposes would not.
  • **Attribution:** Regardless of the license, all images must be properly attributed to the original author or source. This includes providing the author's name, the source of the image, and the license under which it is released. Use the appropriate template for attribution.
  • **Derivative Works:** If you create a derivative work based on a copyrighted image, you must still comply with the terms of the original license. This may require obtaining permission from the copyright holder.

4. Technical Guidelines

  • **File Formats:** We prefer images in the following formats:
   * **JPEG:** For photographs and images with complex color gradients.
   * **PNG:** For images with sharp lines, text, or transparency.
   * **SVG:** For vector graphics that can be scaled without loss of quality. SVG is ideal for diagrams and charts. Consider using SVG for illustrating a Bollinger Bands indicator.
   * **GIF:** For simple animations (use sparingly).
  • **File Size:** Images should be optimized for web use to minimize file size and loading times. Large images can significantly slow down page loading speeds. Aim for a file size of less than 2MB, unless absolutely necessary.
  • **Resolution:** Images should have sufficient resolution to be clear and legible, but not excessively high resolution. A resolution of 72-96 DPI is generally sufficient for web display.
  • **Naming Conventions:** Use descriptive and informative file names. Avoid generic names like "image1.jpg." Use keywords relevant to the image content. For example, "candlestick_pattern_hammer.png."
  • **Image Description:** Provide a detailed and accurate description of the image in the image page. This description should include the subject of the image, its relevance to the article, and any copyright or licensing information. The description should also be accessible to users with disabilities (alt text).
  • **Alt Text:** Always provide descriptive alt text for images. Alt text is displayed when the image cannot be loaded, and it is used by screen readers to provide a description of the image to visually impaired users. Alt text should be concise and accurately reflect the content of the image. For example, "Hammer candlestick pattern indicating a potential bullish reversal."
  • **Thumbnails:** Use thumbnails to display images within articles. Thumbnails are smaller versions of the image that load faster and take up less space.
  • **Image Placement:** Place images strategically within the article to enhance readability and understanding. Avoid placing images randomly or without a clear purpose. Consider the flow of the text and the visual impact of the image.
  • **Image Manipulation:** Image manipulation should be minimal and should not distort the meaning of the image. Avoid adding misleading information or altering the image in a way that misrepresents the original subject.

5. Prohibited Images

The following types of images are prohibited:

  • **Copyrighted Images Without Permission:** As discussed above.
  • **Offensive or Inappropriate Content:** Images that are sexually explicit, violent, hateful, discriminatory, or otherwise offensive.
  • **Personal Information:** Images that reveal personal information about individuals without their consent. This includes addresses, phone numbers, and other sensitive data.
  • **Logos and Trademarks:** Use of logos and trademarks is generally restricted. We may allow limited use of logos for identification purposes, but only with proper attribution and in accordance with trademark law.
  • **Promotional Material:** Images that are primarily promotional in nature are prohibited. This includes advertisements and marketing materials.
  • **Misleading or False Information:** Images that contain false or misleading information. For example, a manipulated chart designed to create a false impression of market trends, relating to Elliott Wave Theory.
  • **Images Violating Privacy:** Images taken without the consent of the subject, especially in private settings.
  • **Watermarked Images:** Images with prominent watermarks are generally discouraged, as they detract from the visual quality of the page.

6. Uploading Images

To upload an image, use the "Upload file" link in the toolbox (usually located on the left sidebar). You will be prompted to provide the following information:

  • **File Name:** Choose a descriptive file name.
  • **File Source:** Indicate the source of the image.
  • **License:** Select the appropriate license under which the image is released.
  • **Image Description:** Provide a detailed description of the image.
  • **Alt Text:** Provide descriptive alt text for the image.

7. Image Review and Removal

All uploaded images are subject to review by administrators and moderators. Images that violate this policy will be removed. If you believe an image has been removed in error, you can appeal the decision by contacting an administrator. Users are encouraged to report images that they believe violate this policy. We also actively monitor for potential copyright violations using automated tools and manual review. This is linked to our overall Content Moderation strategy.

8. Specific Considerations for Financial Charts & Data

Given the nature of this wiki, a significant portion of images will likely be financial charts and data visualizations. The following points are crucial:

  • **Data Source:** Always clearly state the source of the data used to create the chart (e.g., Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg, TradingView).
  • **Timeframe:** Clearly indicate the timeframe of the chart (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly).
  • **Indicators:** If the chart includes technical indicators (e.g., MACD, RSI, Stochastic Oscillator), clearly identify them and their parameters.
  • **Accuracy:** Ensure the chart accurately reflects the underlying data. Avoid manipulating the chart to create a false impression.
  • **Disclaimer:** Include a disclaimer stating that past performance is not indicative of future results. This is particularly important for charts used to illustrate trading strategies. Remember the importance of Risk Management.
  • **Chart Types:** Choose the appropriate chart type for the data being presented (e.g., candlestick chart, line chart, bar chart).
  • **Trendlines & Support/Resistance:** When illustrating trendlines or support/resistance levels, ensure these are drawn accurately and are clearly explained. A visual representation of Dow Theory principles should be accurate.
  • **Pattern Recognition:** If the chart is used to illustrate a chart pattern (e.g., head and shoulders, double top), clearly identify the pattern and explain its significance. Understanding Japanese Candlesticks is vital here.
  • **Volume Analysis:** If volume is included in the chart, explain its relevance to the analysis. Consider the role of [[On Balance Volume (OBV)].
  • **Correlation Analysis:** If showing correlations between assets, clearly indicate the correlation coefficient and the timeframe.
  • **Volatility Measures:** If illustrating volatility, using indicators like Average True Range (ATR), clearly explain the interpretation.
  • **Market Sentiment:** Visualizations of market sentiment (e.g., using put/call ratios) must be accurately sourced and explained.
  • **Economic Calendars:** Screenshots or images related to economic calendars must include the source and date of the data.
  • **Forex Pairs & Commodities:** Ensure accurate symbol representation for Forex pairs and commodities.

9. Updates to this Policy

This image policy may be updated from time to time. Users are responsible for staying informed of the latest version of the policy. Significant changes will be announced on the Main Page.
